Now, I ain’t usually one for takin’ pills and potions—my granddaddy lived to 94 on nothin’ but bacon, coffee, and spite—but lemme tell ya somethin’ aboot gettin’ older. I’m 34 years old, and some days my memory’s leakin’ like an old Ford pickup with a cracked radiator. Walk into a room and forget why I’m there. Can’t remember where I parked my truck at Buc-ee’s. Call my ex-girlfriend Becky by her sister’s name one time too many. It’s sad, y’all. Lonely too, when you can’t recall the good stories at the barbecue.
So my buddy Chet from the rig, he tells me ’bout BrainPill. Says it’s got “natural nootropics” in it—which sounds like somethin’ from Star Trek, but he swears by it. I figured, what the hell, I’ll give it a burl.
First week? Didn’t notice much. Thought I’d been sold snake oil by some city slicker. But then, second week, somethin’ clicked. I was at the honky-tonk, and my buddy Daryl starts tellin’ that story aboot the time we got stuck in the mud down by Galveston. Usually I just nod along ’cause I can’t remember half of it, but this time? This time I remembered details I ain’t thought aboot in years—the color of the tow truck, what the bartender said when we finally walked in, even what kind of beer we were drinkin’ (Shiner Bock, naturally).
I started noticin’ other things too. At work—yeah, I work logistics at a warehouse, gotta keep track of numbers and such—I wasn’t makin’ them little mistakes no more. My boss, he actually asked if I’d been sleepin’ better ’cause I seemed sharper. Focused better under pressure too, which is good ’cause when you’re movin’ forklifts, you gotta pay attention or somebody’s gonna end up in the emergency room.
Now, they say Ken Jennings uses this stuff—that fella who won Jeopardy 74 times straight. I reckon if it’s good enough for the smartest man on television, it’s good enough for Jake from Houston. I ain’t sayin’ I’m gonna go on Jeopardy and win me a million dollars, but I did remember my mama’s birthday this year without my sister havin’ to remind me three times. That’s worth somethin’.
The brain fog? The stuff that used to roll in around 2 PM like a thunderstorm over the prairie? Gone, y’all. I can think clear through the day now. Problem-solvin’ comes easier too—fixed the carburetor on my truck last week without havin’ to watch seventeen YouTube videos first.
I been recommendin’ it to folks. My nephew, he’s studyin’ for the MCAT to be a doctor—smart kid, but nervous. I told him, “Boy, get you some BrainPill, give yourself that unfair advantage.” My cousin who works at the bank, she’s takin’ it too. Says she’s handlin’ her accounts better, rememberin’ all them client names and numbers.
Is it perfect? Nah. It ain’t cheap, and you gotta take it regular—skip a day and you feel it. And I reckon it works different for everybody. But for me? It’s been a godsend. I feel like I got my edge back, like I’m not just driftin’ through the days forgettin’ where I left my boots.
If you’re a student pullin’ all-nighters, a professional tryin’ to climb that ladder, or just a fella like me who don’t want to forget the good times? Give it a shot. It might just buy you some peace of mind, and maybe some of them luxuries in life too—like rememberin’ your anniversary without Facebook havin’ to remind ya.
4.5 stars. Losin’ half a star ’cause the pills are kinda big and I choke on ’em sometimes, but that’s just me bein’ dramatic.
Stay sharp, y’all.
Jake, 34, Houston
P.S. – I really did remember Becky’s birthday too, which is a miracle ’cause usually I try to forget everythin’ aboot that woman. Bless her heart.
